A “forbidden dream” – For many of us, snowboarding is not just a sport; It is a passion that fills us with joy every time we slide on the snow. The possibility of transforming this passion into something deeper can be a “forbidden dream” for many.
Have you ever imagined turning your passion for snowboarding into a profession? Or maybe you just want to take on a personal challenge or improve yourself? Whether your dream is to make a living from snowboarding or to develop your skills to the fullest, there is an exciting route worth knowing. In this article, we will explore the path to becoming a snowboard instructor.
But who can try – Everyone. There is no limit of gender, age, or experience.
“Great things don’t come from a small mind. Dreaming big is the beginning of great feats.” – Wilfred Peterson
How it works – The path to becoming a snowboard instructor begins with a preparation to face the selections. The selections are 2-day events, organized by the regions, to which anyone interested in becoming a teacher can apply. They are divided into several stages, each designed to test your technical snowboarding skills.
- Day 1: Barrage Trials – The day consists of two trials. The first race consists of a timed giant slalom. The second test is a jump with grab, in which the type of grab to be performed is drawn randomly and can be one of the six main grabs.
- Day 2: “Score” tests – Participants who pass the threshold phase advance to the second day of selections. It includes a series of tests: turns in both gaits, jibbing, boxing, and jumps with rotation. At each test you receive a score that will help evaluate the rider’s technical preparation in various areas of snowboarding.
- At the end of the second day, participants who receive a sufficient score will pass the selections and will have access to the training course organized by the region to become snowboard instructors.
The course – Once you have passed the selections, you can access the training course. This course, lasting about 90 days spread over one or two years depending on the region, is a unique experience. You delve into every aspect of snowboarding and its surroundings. Technical improvement, deepening of the didactic aspect, and various relevant cultural topics are addressed (e.g. knowledge of the mountain environment, cartography, psychopedagogy, etc.).
So where do you start? – Success requires preparation. Plan a training path to better prepare for the selections. Constantly improve your skills and prepare for the specific tests of the selections. Be paired with a master or coach who can help you understand which areas of your riding to focus your training on, and who can accompany you throughout the journey…. And in any case, remember that passion and dedication will always be your best weapons.
