A few weeks ago Gigi had the pleasure of being interviewed by Luca di Outdoortest.it about how to choose a Splitboard. Below are some points from the interview, but if you want to read it in full you can click here.

First of all, what are the main differences between a snowboard and a splitboard?
Snowboards and splitboards share the goal of gliding through the snow but are designed for different purposes. Snowboards are designed for on-piste and off-piste descents, offering maneuverability and variety for every style of rider. The splitboards, which can be divided into two parts, are designed for the backcountry, where there are no rigs and require skins for the ascent, offering unique versatility at the expense of handling, for example tricks or freestyle in general.
One aspect to consider is the importance of weight. Many splitboard manufacturers offer lighter versions or models emphasized for their lightness. Weight becomes a critical factor when long hikes or with significant differences in height are planned. For those who are new to the world of splitboards, the basic, cheaper versions may be sufficient and suitable to perform the same functions as the advanced versions. Wide versions are also available for riders with larger feet.
For those who do not know the world of sealskins, what are they used for and what characteristics must they have for those who are new to a splitboard?
Ski skins allow climbing on snow by attaching them under splitboards. For beginners, it is crucial to choose skins that are easily adaptable to the splitboard, intuitive to use, with a good balance between grip and glide, and easy to maintain. The combination of
mohair and nylon offers an ideal compromisebetween performance and handling . Originally, the skins were of animal origin, today they are made of synthetic materials(nylon) or textile fiber of animal origin (mohair) obtained from the hair of the Angora goat.
Do the boots also have to be specific?
It is not strictly necessary to use splitboard-specific boots, but some models offer advantages in terms of support, flexibility and compatibility with bindings. It’s
important to strike a balance between comfort and performance , while also considering build quality and protection from the elements. When you go up a level they become especially important on traverses.
In this new discipline, the apparatus will also have to face the climb. Are there situations where splitboarding is at a disadvantage compared to a touring ski?
Yes, in situations such as traverses on steep slopes or uneven terrain, being wider, the splitboard can be less maneuverable than touring skis. However, by choosing quality skins, adjusting the bindings correctly and improving your climbing technique, you can mitigate these disadvantages and enjoy the freedom that splitboarding offers.
In terms of handling, are there any differences between a splitboard and a snowboard?
Yes, splitboards tend to be more flexible and less responsive than traditional snowboards, affecting precision and maneuverability on the descent. However, technological advancements have narrowed this gap, and many riders appreciate the versatility and backcountry access that splitboards offer.
Splitboard rides are something wonderful and indescribable. They bring us back to breathe and talk to nature in a unique way. Everyone must advance at their own pace, with their own thoughts and dreams… from March 30 to April 6, 2024 we will be splitboarding in the most magical setting that exists: the Norwegian fjords!
